Numbers! They can be difficult to understand, difficult to memorise, and difficult to deal with for many, yet they are quintessential for all. We rely on numbers in countless ways to navigate the world around us, and often the journey is tough for most of us when it comes to complex calculations involving multiple numbers. But there are a few who master the subtle art of traversing effortlessly with numbers, and DGM,HRM, Plate Processing and Dispatch, Hisar, Mr Sanjay Gupta is one among them. It’s no wonder that when one of the leaders asked about the product cost, Mr Gupta was the only one who could quote accurate figures instantly, while others were rushing to refer to files and calculators. Becoming an integral member of the Jindal Stainless family on his 21st birthday, January 2, 1995, Mr Gupta has been a driving force in pioneering groundbreaking results.

Tell us about your life before Jindal Stainless.

I believe my life before Jindal Stainless was tailor made for me to ultimately land here. Multitasking has been my forte since a young age as I pursued my diploma in Mechanical Engineering while looking after my family business simultaneously and have also completed BS in Engineering from BITS Pilani in 2011. The early experience of leading critical business operations from a young age has helped me to develop the significant skill of decision-making during crucial times. The credit for this empowerment goes to my father, who instilled faith in me by handing over responsibilities at a very young age. I believe that the strong faith, support, and guidance of my father helped me to develop strong business acumen, a trait that has enabled me to remain calm, composed, and confident in challenging situations and deliver my best here. I joined Jindal Stainless with a deep commercial understanding developed at a young age, which has helped me to become an active contributor to the organisation’s highly-paced developmental journey.

How has the journey of Jindal Stainless been for you?

The journey here has been an extremely amazing and enriching one. I consider myself fortunate enough to be part of a workplace that has never stopped me from learning new things and developing new skill sets with time, along with giving me the right platform and opportunity to use these learnings to deliver big results. This positive and highly motivating culture is the foundation of my confident personality today. The fact that I joined Jindal Stainless as a DET in 1995 and now I am spearheading the hot rolling mill as DGM is testimony to a highly positive work culture that has helped me grow over time. The journey would not have been an exceptional one without former Deputy MD, Mr R G Garg; former R&D Head, Mr L K Singhal; Director & COO, Mr J Sood; and VP, CRD & SPD, Mr Rajinder Raina, who recognised my techno-commercial talent and always inspired me to deliver my best. The opportunity to work closely with Head Manufacturing, Hisar Unit, Mr V K Bindlish has taught me the precious quality of keeping patience irrespective of the circumstances. Also, working with people who once worked with our beloved Bauji fills me with immense courage and motivation and always keeps me going irrespective of the circumstances around.

I have always felt at home at this company, which has allowed me to fully unleash my talent. As a result, several of the projects I have worked on in the past have been revolutionary. For example, we were able to upgrade the quality of our flat product by getting feedback from customers. We also stepped up to serve the defense sector with the help of defence and R&D team by completing the processing of grade 15 CDV6 plates , which is now used in satellites. I have also worked under guidebce of Director & COO, Mr J Sood for processing and improving the quality of JBS grade at Hot Rolling Mill, the grade used in Razor Blade. I feel proud to say that I am part of the patent team for Armor grade JD-1.

We were able to reach the target of 300 tonnes without any additional cost investment as we used the existing plate pickling process. This was one of the many memorable moments for me, in which, the power of collective efforts and not giving up shone the brightest!
