Sugarcane farmers in Deoda village of Jajpur, Odisha, faced problems related to the overall soil health, due to the previous overdose of chemical fertilisers and pesticides. This negatively impacted the crop productivity, increased cost of cultivation and hence, decreased the incomes of the farmers.

Jindal Stainless Foundation (JSF), in collaboration with Gram Unnati Foundation (GUF), initiated a demonstration on Soil Microbial Probiotic Consortium (SPMC)- COPIO, with farmers in Dharamshala block. COPIO stimulates the growth of the plant and helps in the multiplication of beneficial mircobes in the soil near the root region, resulting in improvement in the soil health. This initiative has helped the farmers immensely and has gained popularity among them. JSF plans to expand this among a larger base of farmers in the next sugarcane cropping season.
