Meet Mr Balwant Singh Rawat, whose behind-the-scene work is indispensible to our organization. From Admin work, to Cricket, to R&D, it’s been quite a journey. Read on to find out why our Chairman, Mr Rattan Jindal, fondly addressed him as ‘Tendulkar’.
Tell Us About Your Life Before Jindal Stainless.
Ever since I joined Jindal Stainless, I do not remember a single day of not being a Jindalite. Hisar is pretty much home to me now, as I have spent most of my life here. This place gradually grows on you and the longer you live here, the more difficult it is to get away from it. Although, I hail from Almora in Uttarakhand, I shifted to Hisar after the death of my father. The premature loss of my father made me resilient, responsible and independent. I came here in 1989 to stay with my uncle, who was the Head Chef in Vidya Devi Jindal School. I worked in the school tuck shop for one year, and this is how my Jindal journey started.
How Has The Jindal Stainless Journey Been For You?
Before 2004, I worked as an admin executive in our factory. My daily job was to monitor the use of equipment and supplies within the office, deal with queries or requests from visitors and employees, assist other administrative staff in a wide range of office duties, collect and distribute couriers and parcels among employees, and coordinate with the office staff to create a friendly environment within the office. People often ask me what skills one requires for this job. I tell them that one should be honest, respectful and trustworthy. Knowledge can be acquired but these qualities speak volumes about one’s fundamental character. In 2004, because of family responsibilities and my willingness to learn, I requested the management to change my profile. At that time, the R&D building was still under construction. I requested Mr Vipul Jain, who was the Head of R&D at that time and was transferred to the R&D wing of our stainless plant, with support from Mr R G Garg. Since then I have been working as a lab assistant in the position of Senior Foreman. My knowledge has been acquired here through sheer practical exposure under the guidance of my mentors, Mr L K Sighal and Mr Arijit Podder. My work is to prepare samples (macrostructures) of stainless steel for testing using various laboratory equipment, classifying and labeling of samples ,maintaining all laboratory records, complying with correct procedures, policies and health and safety regulations, as well as, cleaning and maintaining all the equipment. Although my work rarely gets in the limelight, it is quite satisfying for me to work here.
Share Some Of Your Memorable Experiences From Work.
This year, I celebrated my pearl anniversary at Jindal Stainless. If I look back on my working life, there are uncountable memories that stand out. The Silver Jubilee celebration of the company was one of the most memorable experiences and I am ecstatic to be a part of this organization as it is entering its Golden Jubilee year. Another small experience which made me feel pleasant was when I was appreciated by Mr Sood for preparing a microstructure (sample) of stainless steel for a group of students from IIT Roorkee for metal analysis.
What Do You Like To Do In Your Spare Time?
I love talking to people and listening to their stories. When you sit down with someone and really talk to them, you realize that life is full of endless possibilities. I also enjoy playing cricket. There were times when I used to play cricket with the Jindal family at Jindal House. Since I was short in height and chubby cheeked, Ratan bauji used to call me Tendulkar. Even in social gatherings, he used to joke around with his friends and would say, ‘Do you want to meet Sachin Tendulkar?’. Furthermore, I am also part of my home state association in Hisar to promote and preserve our local traditions and culture. This gives me a platform to help others and do some community service.
What Is Your Message To Jindal Stainless Family?
(From childhood to old age, life has been and will be spent in Hisar). I am grateful to this company for giving me unconditional support and opportunities to change my life for the better. I have four kids, and I could have never imagined that they would get a chance to study from such a good school like OPJMS. My two daughters scored above 90% in their board exams, and this makes me proud. The journey from an office boy to a lab assistant in the R&D wing, which is the heart of this company, has been impeccable. If this can happen then, Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai (…anything can happen!).
